FILKINS

FILKINS

As my grandmother always used to say, ‘Dear little Filkins’. Why she said it I cannot remember, but she always loved this part of the Cotswolds.

The town is well worth a visit just to see so many fine slabs of stones, perhaps from the Filkins Stone Company, now acting as boundaries, as seen in the picture to the left and the drawing below.

The picture, left, shows Filkins’ old lock-up and below, the building it adjoins—a 17th century cottage which is now the town museum and was founded by George Swinford in 1931 with the help and support of Sir Stafford Cripps.

The inside of the lock-up can be seen via a small iron grill which shows the viewer that this is not the most comfortable accommodation to be had.

Filkins can easily be located just off the main road between Burford and Lechlade.
